The Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) will take place in Nice, France, from June 9 to 13, 2025, co-hosted by France and Costa Rica. This global gathering aims to accelerate action on Sustainable Development Goal 14: to conserve and sustainably use the ocean, seas, and marine resources. UNOC3 will focus on strengthening ocean governance, mobilizing funding for a sustainable blue economy, and promoting the use of ocean science in decision-making. The conference will bring together world leaders, experts, civil society, and private sector stakeholders to adopt the “Nice Ocean Action Plan,” outlining voluntary commitments and a shared vision for ocean protection.

The Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University (BKWSU), an NGO with UN consultative status, will participate in UNOC3, bringing a values-based and ethical perspective to global discussions that complements scientific and policy approaches. Accredited to several UN environmental conventions, the Brahma Kumaris promote inner awareness as the foundation for meaningful and sustainable action.

The Brahma Kumaris affirm that real, lasting change begins with a shift in individual awareness—a transformation of minds and hearts. We see the Earth and ocean as sacred, living systems, and recognize that by deepening our relationship with nature, we can overcome the inner drivers of destruction and foster more compassionate, sustainable ways of living.

Brahma Kumaris Priorities for Ocean Care :

  • Cultivating Spiritual and Environmental Awareness: Awakening a renewed inner connection with the ocean as a sacred, living system.
  • Honoring and Respecting the Ocean: Adopting values and actions that protect marine life and reject harmful practices like deep-sea mining and industrial overexploitation.
  • Embracing Generosity and Gratitude: Promoting simplicity, non-violence, and mindful consumption to reduce ocean waste and pollution.
  • Supporting Vulnerable Communities: Standing with indigenous, coastal, and island peoples whose cultural and spiritual ties to the ocean are vital to its protection.
  • Supporting Inclusivity and Synergies in Multilateral Agreements: Backing international efforts such as the BBNJ Treaty and coordination under the CBD, UNFCCC, and UNCCD to place ocean health at the heart of sustainability.
  • Advocating a Human Rights Approach Rooted in Care and Justice: Defending the rights of communities impacted by ocean degradation and protecting environmental defenders.
  • Fostering Interfaith Collaboration: Encouraging spiritual unity and shared responsibility through initiatives like the “Faith in the Ocean” multi-faith declaration.

We offer these priorities as a call to integrate spiritual wisdom into global ocean efforts. A thriving marine ecosystem and a sustainable future depend on a shift that begins within each of us.
