COP President Do Lago is in a hurry as the endgame of COP30 has started. His 11th letter, released late on Monday, calls on countries to “accelerate the pace.” He later outlined plans for two major decisions in Belém: the first is a broad “Mutirão decision” addressing contentious issues such as trade, finance, and NDCs; the second is a potential agreement on a fossil fuel phaseout “roadmap.” He is pressing delegates hard for a positive outcome, and it remains to be seen whether his negotiation tactics will succeed.
A recent investigation revealed that more than 300 industrial agriculture lobbyists are attending this year’s UN climate talks—the same industry responsible for major global deforestation. Experts have also criticised the paradox of excluding civil society from key negotiations while fossil fuel lobbyists continue to be granted access.
