Tribute to Professor Wangari Maathai
- Details
1 April 1940 – 25 September 2011
Professor Maathai played a very important role as an environmentalist, campaigner for women's rights and for the abolition of poverty. Her tireless dedication earned her the respect of millions around the world.
However, perhaps a less well-know aspect of Wangari's life was her keen interest in spirituality. Over the years, she struck up sincere friendships with sisters and brothers of the Brahma Kumaris and enjoyed meditation practice. She had unfailing faith in God and this connection was the source of inner power that enabled her to move through the many challenges she faced. The Brahma Kumaris will miss a dynamic personality who was a good friend to so many, especially those who are marginalised in today's world.
